And who better to guide you on this journey than Safari Multiways, your premier tour operator in Tanzania?

Understanding the Lemosho Route: A Path Less Traveled

The Lemosho route is renowned for its beauty, remoteness, and success rate, making it one of the best approaches to the summit of Kilimanjaro. But how long is the Lemosho route? Typically, this journey spans 7 to 8 days, depending on your pace and how well your body acclimatizes to the altitude. At Safari Multiways, we recommend the 8-day option to give you a higher chance of success and a more enjoyable experience.

Day by Day: What to Expect on the Lemosho Route

Embark on a journey of a lifetime with this day-by-day breakdown, crafted to prepare you for the adventure that lies ahead.

Day 1: From Arusha to Lemosho Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp

Your adventure begins with a scenic drive from Arusha to the Lemosho Gate. The trek starts in the lush rainforest, where the chirps of exotic birds fill the air, and the chance to spot wildlife like monkeys adds to the excitement. The first camp, Mti Mkubwa, is nestled at 2,650 meters, where you’ll spend your first starlit night on the mountain.

Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp

As you ascend, the forest gradually thins, revealing the vast moorlands of the Shira Plateau, one of the highest plateaus on earth. By the time you reach Shira 1 Camp at 3,610 meters, you’re treated to your first close-up views of the Kibo peak.

Day 3: Shira 1 Camp to Moir Hut

This less trodden path takes you across the Shira Plateau to the enchanting Moir Hut at 4,200 meters. This route offers spectacular views and a peaceful setting away from the more crowded trails.

Day 4: Moir Hut to Barranco Camp

Traverse the high alpine desert landscape, with its stark beauty and surreal vegetation like the giant senecios. This day includes climbing the challenging Lava Tower (4,630 meters) for acclimatization, followed by a descent to Barranco Camp at 3,960 meters, known for its stunning giant lobelia plants and the imposing Barranco Wall.

Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

The day begins with an exhilarating climb up the Barranco Wall. While physically demanding, reaching the top is incredibly rewarding, offering panoramic views of the mountain’s southern face. The trail then dips into the Karanga Valley and up to Karanga Camp (3,995 meters), another great spot for acclimatization.

Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Heading to Barafu Camp (4,673 meters), the landscape shifts to a sparse, lunar-like setting. This camp is strategically positioned for your summit attempt, which begins at midnight. Rest and prepare for the most challenging yet thrilling part of your trek.

Day 7: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

The trek to the summit starts under the cover of darkness, winding up steep scree slopes to Stella Point and finally to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters—the highest point in Africa. After relishing the accomplishment and the sunrise views, begin the descent to Mweka Camp (3,080 meters).

Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

The final descent takes you back into the rainforest, with a mellow trek to Mweka Gate. Here, you’ll receive your summit certificate, concluding your epic journey.
