7 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing Itinerary on Rongai Route

Are you ready for the adventure of a lifetime? Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is not just about reaching the summit; it’s about experiencing the breathtaking beauty of nature, the thrill of adventure, and the joy of conquering challenges. At Safari Multiways, we specialize in turning your dreams into reality. Join us as we guide you through an unforgettable 7-day trek on the Rongai Route, one of the most spectacular ways to ascend Africa’s highest peak.

Why Choose the Rongai Route?

The Rongai Route is a hidden gem among Kilimanjaro climbing options. Unlike the more popular Marangu and Machame routes, it offers a quieter, more scenic experience. Starting from the northern side of the mountain near the Kenya-Tanzania border, this route provides stunning views of the vast savannah and the opportunity to see diverse wildlife. The trek is less crowded, allowing you to immerse yourself in the tranquility of nature.

Day 1: Arrival in Tanzania

Welcome to Tanzania! Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), a friendly member of the Safari Multiways team will be there to greet you. After a warm welcome, you’ll be transferred to your hotel in Arusha, where you can relax and prepare for your adventure. Take some time to explore the vibrant culture and delicious cuisine of this beautiful country.

Day 2: Arusha to Rongai Gate – Trek to Simba Camp

After a hearty breakfast, we’ll depart for the Rongai Gate (2,000m). The journey takes approximately 4 hours, offering scenic views of the surrounding landscapes. Once we arrive at the gate, our adventure truly begins! We’ll start trekking through lush montane forests, where you might spot playful monkeys and colorful birds.

After about 6-7 hours of hiking, we’ll reach Simba Camp (2,600m). Here, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Kibo summit while our guides prepare a delicious dinner. As you sit around the campfire, listen to the sounds of nature and share stories with your fellow adventurers.

Day 3: Simba Camp to Second Cave

Rise and shine! After breakfast, we’ll continue our ascent towards the Second Cave (3,450m). This day is all about acclimatization, so we’ll hike slowly and steadily, allowing your body to adjust to the altitude. The trail takes us through beautiful open moorland, where you’ll see unique plant species like giant lobelias and senecios.

After an exhilarating 3-4 hours of trekking, we’ll reach the Second Cave, where we’ll set up camp for the night. From here, you can enjoy stunning sunset views over the plains of Kenya. What a perfect way to end the day!

Day 4: Second Cave to Kikelewa Camp

Today’s trek will take us to Kikelewa Camp (3,600m). This is an exciting day as we’ll have the chance to explore the stunning landscapes that surround Kilimanjaro. The trail meanders through the beautiful heathland and offers panoramic views of the mountain.

After a relatively easy 4-5 hour trek, we’ll set up camp at Kikelewa. This is the perfect opportunity to relax and take in the majestic scenery. Don’t forget to capture these moments with your camera!

Day 5: Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn

Get your hiking boots ready! After breakfast, we’ll make our way to Mawenzi Tarn (4,330m), a stunning campsite nestled at the foot of the Mawenzi peak. The trail offers fantastic views of the jagged peaks and unique rock formations.

This day is about gaining altitude and acclimatization. The hike will take around 4-5 hours, and upon arriving at Mawenzi Tarn, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views. Spend the afternoon exploring the area; take photographs, or simply relax and enjoy the beauty around you.

Day 6: Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo Camp

Today, we trek from Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo Camp (4,700m). This is an important day that leads us closer to the summit! The landscape changes as we leave behind the rocky terrain and enter the expansive alpine desert.

This trek will take about 5-6 hours, and you’ll feel the excitement building as we make our way to Kibo Camp. After arriving, take some time to rest and prepare for the midnight ascent. Our guides will provide you with a hearty dinner and a briefing on the summit push.

Day 7: Summit Day – Kibo Camp to Uhuru Peak

This is it! The day you’ve been waiting for. We’ll start our ascent around midnight, bundled up in warm gear and armed with headlamps. The trek to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) is challenging but incredibly rewarding.

The first part of the trek will take us up a steep, rocky path known as Gilman’s Point (5,685m). As we climb, keep your eyes peeled for the stunning sunrise over the African plains. After a rest at Gilman’s Point, we’ll continue our trek to Uhuru Peak, where you’ll be greeted by an unforgettable view and a sense of accomplishment that is difficult to describe.

After taking in the views and snapping some pictures, we’ll begin our descent back to Kibo Camp for a well-deserved rest. After a short break, we’ll continue our trek down the mountain, returning to Horombo Camp (3,720m) to celebrate our success!

Day 8: Horombo Camp to Marangu Gate – Departure

Our final day of trekking will take us from Horombo Camp to the Marangu Gate. This descent is about 20 kilometers and takes approximately 6-7 hours. Enjoy the lush rainforest and the sounds of nature as we make our way down.

Once we reach the gate, we’ll sign out and celebrate your incredible achievement with a certificate presentation. Then, we’ll transfer you back to your hotel in Arusha, where you can relax and reminisce about your Kilimanjaro adventure.
