The Shira Route is a fantastic option for climbers looking for a unique experience on Kilimanjaro. With its scenic beauty and diverse wildlife, this route provides an incredible opportunity to connect with nature while enjoying the thrill of reaching the summit, Uhuru Peak, at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet).
Now that you know why you should choose Safari Multiways for your Kilimanjaro adventure, let’s dive into the exciting eight-day itinerary!
Your adventure begins in Arusha, the gateway to Mount Kilimanjaro! After arriving at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be greeted by our friendly Safari Multiways team. We’ll transfer you to your hotel in Arusha, where you can relax and acclimatize to the Tanzanian atmosphere. Enjoy a delicious welcome dinner as we brief you about the trek ahead and check your gear.
Early in the morning, after a hearty breakfast, we will head to the Shira Gate (1,800m/5,906ft). The drive is scenic, taking you through beautiful landscapes and lush countryside. Upon arrival at the gate, we will complete the necessary registration formalities.
As we start our trek, you’ll immediately be captivated by the diverse flora and fauna. The Shira Route introduces you to the stunning heath and moorland ecosystems. Expect to spot unique plants like giant lobelias and senecios. After approximately 6-7 hours of hiking, we’ll reach Shira 1 Camp (3,500m/11,483ft), where you’ll be treated to a warm meal and stunning views of the surrounding peaks.
After a restful night, we’ll enjoy breakfast and set off for the Shira Plateau. Today’s trek is relatively easy, allowing you to acclimatize to the altitude. We’ll take a leisurely hike to Shira 2 Camp (3,850m/12,631ft), which takes around 5-6 hours.
Along the way, we’ll explore the fascinating volcanic landscapes, including ancient lava flows and unique rock formations. The panoramic views of Mount Meru and the surrounding valleys are sure to leave you in awe. Once we arrive at Shira 2 Camp, you’ll have time to relax and soak in the beauty around you.
Today’s trek brings us to the iconic Lava Tower (4,600m/15,091ft), a significant landmark on Kilimanjaro. The ascent will take approximately 5-7 hours, offering breathtaking views of the mountain landscape along the way.
Upon reaching Lava Tower, take a well-deserved break, enjoy a packed lunch, and take in the stunning vistas. After lunch, we’ll descend to Barranco Camp (3,960m/12,995ft). The descent aids in acclimatization, making this day particularly crucial for your body to adjust to the altitude.
Today, we tackle the famous Barranco Wall—a steep and exhilarating climb that offers an adrenaline boost and incredible views. After breakfast, we’ll scale the wall, which takes about 2-3 hours. The climb is rewarding as the landscape transforms into breathtaking scenery.
Once at the top, we’ll trek to Karanga Camp (4,000m/13,123ft), where we’ll spend the night. This camp is a perfect spot to relax and enjoy the serene alpine environment, with views of the mountain and the stars above.
Rise and shine! Today, we’ll head toward Barafu Camp (4,673m/15,331ft). The trek takes about 4-5 hours, and the trail offers unique landscapes as we transition into the alpine desert zone. This is the final camp before the summit, so it’s essential to rest and hydrate well.
At Barafu Camp, you’ll have a hearty dinner and prepare for the big day ahead. Be sure to get a good night’s sleep, as we’ll be starting our summit ascent in the early hours of the morning!
The moment has arrived! We’ll wake up around midnight and begin our ascent to Uhuru Peak. With headlamps lighting our way, we’ll ascend the steep slopes of Kilimanjaro, taking our time to acclimatize and enjoy the incredible starry sky above.
The trek to the summit takes about 6-8 hours, and as you reach the peak at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet), you’ll be greeted by a breathtaking sunrise over the African plains. Celebrate your accomplishment and take plenty of photos before we begin our descent back to Mweka Camp (3,100m/10,171ft).
This part of the trek is crucial for recovery, where a warm meal awaits you at camp.
On the final day of our adventure, we’ll enjoy breakfast and begin our descent to the Mweka Gate. The trek takes about 3-4 hours, and as we walk through the lush rainforest, you may spot various wildlife, such as monkeys and colorful birds.
Once we reach Mweka Gate, we’ll celebrate your achievement with a certificate ceremony! Afterward, a safari awaits to take you back to Arusha, where you can relax and reminisce about your incredible journey.
